Photosketch: From Scrawls to Seamless Photmontage

A group of students from China create a program that turns your simple doodles into photographs

Five students from Tsinghua University and the National University of Singapore have created Photosketch, an exciting new program that translates simple sketches into seamless photomontages created from images pulled from the web. Tao Chen, Ming-Ming Chen, Shi-Min Hu, Ariel Shamir and Ping Tan presented the project in a research paper for Siggraph Asia 2009. Photosketch users draw a bare bones sketch and layout of the image they'd like to create, labeling each item with a basic i.d. Photosketch then searches the web for matching photos and then uses a blending algorithm to figure out which images would work best for the process. The result is a startling photo image based on the original layout.

My first thought is copyright, how are they selecting the images that they are using in this program? Are they all coming from a royalty free website such as i-stock photo.com, or are they just doing a glorified google image search??

That's pretty cool software right there. It just goes to show that image and sound tracking technology is going even further. Software is being programmed to an all new level. Maybe one day this will be all standard soon.

i think this is a nice program. i like how you can draw the outline of an object and the search will get rid of the ones that don't match because a lot of times when you're searching for a picture you get random pictures.

i think that they are copyrighting, because they are stealing the pictures from google.
it is an easy program to use though.

I think it's good how they have these videos broken down to a science. Its kind of cool how they can put any background up on any video, sort of like green screen.
